When my amazing friend (and fellow blogger) Lauren gave me a pamphlet for the first annual Members 1st 5k for Kids Run I knew right away that I would sign up. Lauren played a big part in organizing the event with the proceeds going to two local children’s charities, Leg Up Farm and Caitlin’s Smiles.
The run was held Saturday morning at the Members 1st headquarters building in Mechanicsburg. The start time for the event was 9 am but I arrived nice and early (around 8:15) to give me ample time to pick up my race bag and get myself ready. When it was time for the race to start I made my way to the starting line and found a spot in the middle of the pack. There were about 150 runners participating in the 5k so the crowd wasn’t too big.
The course itself was relatively flat and comprised of a giant loop and a half through the business park where the headquarters are located. During the run I didn’t pay much attention to my Garmin and just focused on how I was feeling as a gauge of my pace.
When I crossed the finish line, my Garmin said 27:50!! I was absolutely shocked that I managed to maintain a 9 minute mile for 3.1 miles and set a new PR! To cap off a great run, I placed 2nd in my age group (out of 14 runners) and 49th overall!!!
The next race on my calendar is the 9th Annual DUI Victims Memorial 10k Run this Saturday (May 5th) in Harrisburg.

Congrats, Karen! What a confidence booster! Sometimes the Garmin can hold us back when we see a number that we think we can’t hold. That’s awesome that you went by feel and got a new pr!
